Situated on the highest point in the city, Umaid Bhavan is a 347 roomed massive palace that has been named as one of the largest private residences in the world. Boasting of an architecture which is a blend of both Indian and European architecture, Umaid Bhavan Palace is a mirror the rich princely era of jodhpur. Built toward the end of the 19th century as a tribute to the great leader, Jaswant Singh, Jaswant Thada is among the many brilliant architectural landmarks in the wonderful city of Jodhpur. Located next to the mighty Mehrangarsh Fort, it is a frequented place among tourists as it also gives a bigger and better picture of the glorious fort. This milky white memorial is a cenotaph or an empty commemorative tomb built in the honour of Maharaja Jaswant Singh who was once the ruler of Jodhpur and invested well in the state. Constructed in the year 1899, it is now managed and looked after by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and is open to public. One can see here the portraits of the many Marwar rulers along with the informative didactics which help in a better understanding of the history of Marwar. It also proves as a wonderful venue for the morning concerts during the music festivals such as the Rajasthan International Folk Festival and the World Sacred Spirit Festival.
